I’ve been exposed to a great many books during my time as a school teacher of English for 35 years and just recently I was presented with a copy of Mullumbimby Jack. Whilst it ticked the proverbial box of a delightfully fun narrative, it stood out to me as a ‘rebirthing’ of the mischievous larrikinism that seems to have vanished from our bookshelves. I have no doubt children will reap many benefits from this read, such as a geographical understanding of our wider remote (iconic Birdsville) rural areas (so important!) and the encouragement to extend their language beyond mono-syllabic pronunciations. I enjoyed reading about the roguish, adventurous Jack who exhibits the Aussie spirit of fearlessness and free-spiritness. The narrative marries brilliantly with the illustrations by Andrew McIntosh who serves to delight the visionary senses of the reader. Author Damien Rochat should be very proud of his debut into children’s literature.!
